Health Matters

When planning visits to the Republic of Namibia and Southern Africa in general, - whether for trophy hunting and/or family vacation purposes -, travellers should consult their personal physicians early in the process of making travel arrangements.

We at Boet Nel Safaris regularly receive enquiries relating to health risks and recommendations concerning

In fact, you should not accept medical advice from anyone but the physician who is familiar with your particular physical and health conditions, unless your physician refers you to a travel health clinic or another specialised institution.

What we, as a hunting outfitter based in Namibia, can do though is provide you with some general advice that may assist you and your physician in taking informed ...

General:

 - It will be of utmost importance that you drink plenty of plain un-carbonated water during your stay in Namibia in order to counter-act the effects of our predominantly arid climate. Bottled and filtered water is available throughout the country.

- If you are not used to living at altitudes around 800-1300 metres above sea level, you might like to consider taking things a bit easy for the first few days of your stay.

Making some small adjustments in your daily routines to the African environment in Namibia
can go a long way
in maintaining your
well-being, your health,
and an overall enjoyable
hunting & holiday travel experience!

- The main difference foreign visitors regularly notice about the Namibian cuisine is that more fresh and unprocessed ingredients are used for cooking than they are used to - this is far more often the cause of initial digestive problems than food contamination.

-
Basic protection against infections from minor injuries such as bruises, scratches, insect bites, etc. is always a good idea when spending a lot of time outdoors, in the bush, and being physically active.

- If you have to take certain medications on a regular basis, please do bring sufficient supplies from home for your entire trip!
Even though Namibia does have good physicians and medical facilities, you will be far away from places that could possibly provide adequate substitutes while on hunting activities.

- It will also be very important that you protect yourself against sun burns when outdoors, as the African sun radiation is much stronger than in the northern hemisphere. Wearing a cap or hat and covering any exposed body parts with a sun lotion with a very high UV-filter factor is essential. Wearing long-sleeved shirts/blouses and full-length pants, even at peak summer temperatures, is not only recommended for hunting purposes!

- The first question we usually get asked by newcomers to Africa concerns the risks of contracting malaria:
In Namibia, only the northern regions are risk areas, during and, for a limited time, after summer rain falls. The remainder of the

country, including 3 of the 5 hunting areas Boet Nel Safaris regularly utilises, is not affected by malaria at all.
The two of our hunting areas that are located on the southern fringes of the risk zone are the Ehirovipuka Concession and Otjiwarongo (see nos. 4 & 5 on the map) -  we usually hunt there only during the dry winter period.
The decision whether to take malaria prophylaxis or not therefore rests entirely with you and your physician.

Preventing malaria infection (e.g. using mosquito repellent & keeping your body covered with clothing, especially at night), is normally the best strategy to start with.
